The Room of Contentment
Written by Administrator
This is the room where you might hear people react as follows:
  • I like it just as it is
  • We've been doing it like this for years and it's worked OK so far, so why change?
  • It's just another management fad - it will go away soon enough.
  • We tried that before and it didn't work so why bother?
People in this room like things as they are. They see no need to change and do not want to.

People in this room are happy to just do their job (and they may indeed be doing it well) but improving, trying new things, etc are not on their agenda.

People, relationships and organisations that spend most time in this room eventually wither. They get left behind (just like the Australian manufacturers of Australian televisions). They ignored signs of deterioration, or, of outside threat and internal malaise.

Energy levels are very even - all goes along fine, no rocking the boat and the world passes them by.

No change occurs in this room.

For change to happen, people, individuals and organisations need to move from this room.

Moving people from Contentment to Denial

In general the only thing which will move people and/or organisations is some sort of 'SHOCK'.

Moving a person

  • Person very unfit/overweight/smoker is content until the shock of possibly a stroke!
  • Person takes safety for granted in workplace until they or someone else is seriously hurt - shock!
  • Person in a relationship is just happy to go along when the shock of a partner leaving occurs!
  • Person used to do things manually or with basic equipment when sophisticated computers, machines arrive - shock of the new!
  • Person goes along doing job to discover different job in different organisation done in half the time or for much less cost - shock!

Moving a person

  • Government changes/policy/regulations (SHOCK) say:
  • Local Government amalgamate or else!
  • Reduction in tariffs in clothing and footwear industry - lots of businesses who were so content didn't see the changes coming
  • Weekend trading - shock to many small shop owners
  • Increased competition (SHOCK)
  • Australian TV Companies
  • Australian car industry and Japanese car companies much more efficient
  • Optus entering the market - Telecom needed to change
  • Massive changes in technology (SHOCK)
  • Optical fibres meant Telecom had to radically change its technology
  • Big change in consumer opinion (INCREASING SHOCK
  • Environment movement and climate change putting great pressure on polluting manufacturers/mining - got away with polluting in the past
